1-D Straight Diffraction Grating Coupler between Optical Fiber and Silicon on Insulator Waveguide

Grating coupler servers as the medium of coupling light between optical fiber and nanophotonic device. A 1-D uniform grating coupler with shallow etching 70 nm reaches the efficiency about 40.34% theoretically by parameter optimizing. Experiment shows over 20% coupling efficiency is reached with 1 dB bandwidth of 23.4 nm.

This work proposes an electrically tunable silicon nitride (SiN) micro-ring resonator with PSBPLCs cladding. An external vertical electric field can be applied to modulate the effective refractive index of the PSBPLCs cladding and shift the resonance wavelength of 0.45 nm for TM polarized light with Q-factor larger than 20000.

Single-Input Multiple-Output (SIMO) In-Door LED Visible Light Wireless Communications supporting Quality of Service using Mobile-Phone Camera and Photodetector

Visible light communication (VLC) supporting single-input multiple-output (SIMO) quality of service (QoS) by using in-door light-emitting diode (LED), mobile-phone camera and photodetector (PD) is proposed and demonstrated. Hence, the proposed system can support two fixed rate QoS transmissions for two different applications. Experiment result shows the proposed system can support the first data link 300 bit/s by using a mobile-phone camera and the second data link 38.4 kbit/s by using a PD; both detected at a transmission distance of 50 cm with bit error rate (BER) below 1.76 x 10-3 and 1.4 x 10-8 respectively.

Mid-Infrared Continuum Generation through Si-on-Air Nonlinear Waveguides

We solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation on a 1cm Si-on-air waveguide to study the mid-infrared (mid-IR) continuum generation. For a 30fs Gaussian pulse centered at the wavelength of 2.4μm with a peak power of 100W, the spectrum is broadened from 1.75μm to 3.8μm.
